NMMU BTech Exhibition

The NMMU BTech Graduate Exhibition is a collective showing of selected works produced by the fourth year Fine Art students of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. The artworks exhibited stem from a multitude of practical disciplines, theoretical underpinnings and conceptualizations. These include two dimensional prints, drawings and illustrations, as well as three dimensional and relief bronze, glass and ceramic sculptural pieces.

As a collective, this exhibition acts as a visual study, discussion and exploration of a diverse range of subject matter, including (but not limited to) alchemy, social bipolarity, a manmade apocalypse, Christianity, archaeology, self-help, sweet nothings, text, discommunication, the Virgin Mary, dreams and the practical experimentation of ceramic glazes, forms and textures.

Art critic Jeanne Wright on Brent Meistre's SOJOURN exhibition

WHEN Brent Meistre asked me to open this exhibition, I was dubious about my ability to introduce what he does to the general public, as the material, while visually accessible, carries the weight of a very particular philosophy and approach to landscape which is less easily explained. I am thankful that, for most of us, the experience of standing alone in landscape is relatively easy to do as we live close to the kinds of landscape which he has photographed. To be physically in landscape in this country is a primal sensation – it is literally where we’re grounded – where we develop a sense of place and belonging - and it is the space in which we conduct our lives and where we are buried.
